What are your thoughts on these religious instructions?
“If you reject my commands and abhor my laws you will eat the flesh of your own sons and the flesh of your own daughters. I do not allow for a woman to teach. You will have to cut off her hand. Do not forgive her.”
In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris last month, some people pointed to verses from the Quran saying that they justified violence. With all this in mind, two men in Holland set out to conduct an experiment about how ready people were to generalize Islam without being critical of their own beliefs.
They bought a Bible, but put another cover on it so it looked like a Quran. Then they went out into the streets to read passages to people, such as, ‘If two men sleep with each other they will both have to be killed’
They asked people for their initial thoughts, and people said things like:
“How could anyone believe in this?! That’s unbelievable to me.’ ‘The world is changing and I think they should have to adapt to it.’
‘If you’ve been raised with this book and these kinds of thoughts it’s going to influence the way you think.’ ‘To me this sounds like they want to oppress you and force you to believe what they believe.’”
They asked people what the biggest difference was between the Bible and the Quran, and people said that judging from these verses the Muslim holy book was a lot more aggressive.
Then came the big reveal…. They were reading the Bible all along. People were really shocked by their own reactions, saying things like: “Of course I’ve heard Bible stories when I was young and I went to a Christian school, but I really had no idea this was in there.”
