These unfiltered photos of NYC shot between 1977 and September 11, 2001, are a walk back in time to some of New York’s worst and finest areas. It’s incredibly impressive to see how the city and its people have changed over the years.

The shots were taken by talented street photographer Richard Sadler, who walked around the Big Apple for over 30 years, always on the lookout for the next big street scene. New York went to many phases throughout the decades, and Richard Sadler managed to capture it in all of its might and glory.

today was the furst of july…this is 57th st., in n.y.c.: it is a great street to make pictures on because it is wider and therefor brighter than most east/west streets in n.y.c. the point of this post, i titled it “the furst of july,” is in personal remembrance of my dear high school friend, and college roommate, gary kurfirst who had his office on this block….gary’s resume, if you have read this so far, was legendary: at the same time he was the manager for the talking heads the ramones blondie the eurythmics and the b-52’s. gary and i scalped beatles tickets for the july ’64 concert at forest hills….and the rest was history….read about his many other rock and roll “firsts.” r.i.p. dear man, you are in our thoughts…i/we are that man on the sidewalk in 1982, and i am starting to stop making sense…
