The Traveler Restaurant Gives Books As A Gift With Each Meal
The Traveler restaurant gives books as a gift with each meal and people simply can’t get enough of it. It’s one of the places on every book worm’s bucket list and the tourists just keep on coming in since the 70’s.
‘Traveler’ opened in 1970 and since the very beginning, the owners decided to offer their clients a small gift with each meal. The gift comprises out of one, two or three books, and it has been something that makes the restaurant unique for almost half a century.
How did this tradition start? The creator of the Traveler restaurant was a big book lover and collector and after he filled his house with books, he decided it was time to start sharing his collection with his customers.
In 1993, the restaurant’s owners changed, but this unique tradition was kept alive and even today, people receive the same lovely gifts with every dish they order.
“We give away 1 to 2 thousand books a week. We have expanded it to three books per person. The books come from many sources. Library book sales are our best but our customers are a very big contributing factor, not a single day goes by that someone doesn’t bring us books. We have given away approximately 2.5 million books since we have been here,” says the current owner.
“We have a horse trailer that we pick up books with. Some weeks we can go to 4 different libraries to pick up books. There is about 9 thousand books on our shelves for them to choose from.”
