The musical Sea Organ (morske orgulje) is located on the shores of Zadar, Croatia, and is the world’s first musical pipe organ that is played by the sea. On the banks of the Adriatic Sea, some simple and elegant white steps were carved into stone.
Underneath however there are 35 musically tuned tubes with whistle openings on the sidewalk. Now depending on the intensity, velocity and power of the waves that hit the stairs, the organ underneath play a random series of chords.
This sea organ, masterpiece of acoustics and architecture, was created by expert Dalmatian stone carvers and architect Nikola Basic in 2005, who received the European Prize for Urban Public Space for this project.
People from all over the world come to Zadar to enjoy the view accompanied by the sound of the waves and the music that they create. Famed movie director, Alfred Hitchcock once described this exact point on the coast as the most beautiful place to see a perfect sunset from in the whole world. Today, with the added music made by the sea herself through her sea organ, and together with the light show that comes with it , enjoying the sunset here can be a truly magical experience!
