The Dirty City series belongs to a Bilbao-born artist, Alejandro Quincoces, who works mostly in oils and charcoal washes.
The paintings are modern, yet somehow they are not. They belong in both the past and the future, all the while being the present. They are mesmerizing and calm, even though most depict the bustling life of the modern day, dirty city. A permanent mist is present in most of his works. Misty, smoggy, rainy landscapes which show a somehow old, decaying and dying world. The world of today in fact.
A rainy day sort of melancholy is present everywhere where heat, pollution and environmental disasters are given elements in his expressionist vision. It however give you mixed feelings as in both present decadence and the slow disappearance of it at the same time. It makes you feel a sort of longing for these types of mystical scenery.
