Marilyn Monroe’s wedding photos from her first marriage in 1942. She was 16!
Marilyn Monroe’s wedding photos from her first marriage in 1942 are a true blast from the past. They offer us a real insight in the life of Hollywood’s biggest diva, from the time when she was just 16-years-old!
On June 19, 1942, Norma Jeane (Marilyn Monroe) married James Dogherty, a Los Angeles police officer. Long story short, this was the diva’s first marriage and she got remarried twice afterwards. She died of overdose in 1962, after being divorced three times.
Norma and James began dating in January 1942 and got married a few months later, in June, 18 days after the bride had turn 16. The marriage was arranged by a friend of Norma Jean Baker’s mother, who was living next door to James.
“We decided to get married to prevent her from going back to a foster home, but we were in love”, James said in an interview.
The couple lived an idyllic few years of marriage together, and as James said, he was Norma’s first lover. As he described their sex life, it was amazing, after Norma’s first painful ‘encounter’. She grew quite fond of their love life.

“We loved each other madly. I felt like I was the luckiest guy in the world. It was like being on a honeymoon for a year”. After Jimmie enlisted in the Merchant Marines in 1943, things started to change, as the teenage bride began to get bored with loneliness.
She got a job at the Radioplane factory where photos of her started getting popular and she landed several modelling jobs. In September 1946, when James was still overseas, Norma Jean filed for divorce.
“I was on a ship in the Yangtze River getting ready to go into Shanghai when I was served with divorce papers,” James said in a 2002 interview.
“She wanted to sign a contract with Fox and it said she couldn’t be married — they didn’t want a pregnant starlet”, James declared in 1984 interview. “When I went back to see her, I tried to talk her out of it. She just wanted us to keep on and not be married for the contract. I couldn’t do that”.
The couple divorced and separated completely after 4 years of marriage. It was reported that James Dogherty’s second wife would not let him watch movies where Marilyn Monroe, the hottest Hollywood diva was starring in.
