There is a sound reason for why LEGO blocks are such a success with both kids and adults alike. LEGO blocks have the almost-incredible ability to turn one’s imagination into reality. From simple building blocks, children can create an entire universe right on their bedroom floor and recreate all their dreams right before their eyes.

But besides being fun, entertaining and highly imaginative, LEGO blocks also help kids develop their cognitive skills and exercise their logical thinking. And this is a perfect segway into what this article is all about.

Parts vs. whole

School teacher Alycia Zimmerman has been using LEGO blocks to help her young students learn math. It is a very well known fact that people, kids included, learn much better and faster if they are interested in what they are doing. This is why these building blocks are so useful here. If kids already like them so much, it’s much easier for them to understand math.

Fractions

This is one of the biggest problems in learning mathematics. Many teachers opt to teach it to their students, sort of like poetry, if you will, writing down formulas and expecting kids to learn them by heart. But unfortunately, however, this technique doesn’t inspire the students at all and is the main reason for why so many kids don’t find math interesting. Since they don’t actually visualize how maths translates into the real world, the whole thing seems like grunt work for them.

Anyway, miss Zimmerman makes use of these LEGO blocks to help kids visualize just that – how math is the universal language of the universe. But, of course, this only applies to basic formulas like additions, subtractions, fractions, square numbers, and the like. But when it comes to getting your kids on their way, this is an incredibly easy and entertaining method of making math fun.
