Edible Water Balls Could Put an End to Plastic Bottles
These edible water balls could put an end to plastic bottles and to plastic packaging in general. It’s a green solution to combating plastic waste, it’s the way of the future. Plastic waste needs to be reduced to a minimum, and what better way to start than by eliminating one of the main causes of plastic pollution?
This edible water ‘bottle’ plans on replacing millions and millions of plastic bottles which are thrown away every year. Up until now, the producer has managed to raise £500,000 ($630,000) in a crowdfunding campaign. The unique and innovative ‘water bottle’ is called ‘Ooho!’ and it’s made out of a biodegradable and natural membrane. The entire bottle can be swallowed as a whole and it will be the exact same sensation as drinking water.
Ohoo! is made from a tasteless seaweed extract, but flavors can still be added to the water, by choice. Skipping Rocks Lab is the producing company which was founded by 3 London-based design students aiming at creating an entire series of sustainable projects and products.

The company plans on having a trial year for their product to see whether or not Ohoo! will be adopted by the public. Edible water balls will be delivered at major events like marathons and music festivals, and it has all the chances of becoming a real hit, especially since the production costs are lower than the ones for plastic water bottle production.
These balls are created with a block of ice which is dipped in a calcium chloride and brown algae solution, making the biodegradable membrane to form around it. The exterior layer can be peeled off, to keep the exterior of the edible water ball clean.
