Artsy Black And White Photos From Mars

What, did you somehow thought that Mars would be spared from artsy black and white photos for long? Well, no, and a good thing too. These amazing photos here were taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, or MRO, as part of a project to map the planet’s surface, and then they were edited by French designer and publisher, Xavier Barral. They were all published in a book entitled ‘This Is Mars’ – a must-have coffee table piece.

So, what do you guys think? How does Mars look in artsy black and white photos? As surreal as they are, if you didn’t know they were from Mars, you could even assume they were made right here on Earth, right? Some look like deserts, others look like actual river beds, and there are some, like the one taken in Mars’ arctic region which actually looks like a snow-covered tundra, with sporadic trees here and there. Amazing, right?
All of them are courtesy of Nasa/JPL/The University of Arizona, and as we’ve said before, they are part of the ‘This is Mars‘ book. Check it out.
