Those Annoying Silica Gel Packets Are More Useful Than You Think
If you ever bought a new electronic device or a new pair of shoes, you’ve definitely seen these little silica gel packets with the “Do Not Eat” words written on them. They’re in every box, and they’re there for a reason. And for that exact same reason, you should keep on to them instead of immediately throwing them out.
According to Eames Yates from the Business Insider, these silica gel packets can be used on a wide range of things, thus saving you a lot of money, time, and energy that you’d otherwise have to come up with through other means.
Now, these silica gel packets contain small silicon dioxide balls which will absorb moisture from its surroundings and immediately dry out the objects around them. Now, even though it states on the pack not to eat them, they aren’t actually poisonous, or toxic, or anything. They do pose a choking hazard though. Anyway, here are five ways you can put these silica gel packets to good use.
1. Dry out your Phone
The popular belief to drying out a phone if it gets wet is to put it in rice. Rice does work, but these packs work much better. Just leave your phone -switched off- in a jar of these packets overnight and by morning, it should be thoroughly dried out.
2. Defog the Windshield
By placing some of these silica gel packs under the windshield of your car -on the inside, obviously- you will not have to wait for it to defog every morning, regardless of the season or weather outside.
3. Razor blades have a longer life because of them
Metals and moisture together usually lead to rust. That’s why it’s a great idea to keep your razor blades sharp for longer by keeping them dry. And what better way to keep them dry than just by keeping them close to some of these packets. You should also know that a razor blade can suffer from rust and become dull even before it shows any visible signs of rust.
4. Your gym bag stinks and you know it. No more!
A gym bag smells because of bacteria, that’s why locker rooms also smell, and so on. And bacteria thrives in damp and acidic environments – something that sweat provides. So, by keeping some of these silica gel packets in your bag will help with that.
5. Save your old photos
Moisture is also the no.1 enemy of your old family photos, especially if you keep them in attics, cellars or other damp places. They can stick together, or simply deteriorate over time. By keeping them in a box with some of these silica gel packs, will spare them from that fate.
