40 Vintage Offensive Ads Directed At Women
These 40 vintage offensive ads directed at women are certainly something that will never be possible again in future advertisements. Unless you are planning a very expensive lawsuit for you and your company. A lawsuit you will almost certainly lose if you are doing business in any civilized democratic country.
Starting from the late 20’s, the advertising industry started to boom. It created ads for basically everything you could invent and sell. Some products (most of them, actually) weren’t even tested before to analyze different side effects. They were directly placed on the market with a very catchy ad. Remember, during these decades catchy meant being offensive to women.
It was just the way advertising used to work back then. In some cases, advertising is still based on shaming women for what they do, or even worse, for what they don’t do.
These vintage ads are a clear reflection of how our society was shaped by men who wanted only to oppress women. Women were shut down from living a normal life almost all the way up until the late 50’s when men started acknowledging women as their equals.
Considering how much it took women to get the right to vote (about 300 years in the US), we could say that the advertising industry moved a little faster. Although times have changed, even today we still see a lot of women being objectified in ads but our hopes are that these things will soon change.
If you think these 40 vintage ads are offensive to women, wait until you take a look at what they used to do in the early 1900’s. Check out these propaganda posters warning men on the dangers of women’s rights!
