This recipe below is tailored for four servings. If you need more or less than that, then a simple addition or subtraction for each of the ingredients will be enough.
- 8-ounces flank steak, sliced against the grain
- 8 ounces lo mein noodles. Spaghetti noodles work equally as well here
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 3 cups broccoli florets
- 1 medium carrot, shredded
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar, or 3 tablespoons of honey
- ¼ cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- 2 Tablespoons hoisin sauce
- ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- Use a large pot and put some water to boil. Cook the noodles according to the instructions on the package, usually between 9 to 11 minutes, depending on the pasta. During the last 5 minutes, add the broccoli in as well, and cook them together until it turns tender (roughly 5 minutes).
- While all of this is happening, add the olive oil in a medium-sized skillet, and once hot enough, add the steak. Fry it until it’s no longer pink. Add the minced garlic, shredded carrot and cook them together for a minute, or so.
- In the meantime, take a small bowl and whisk together all the other ingredients: ginger, peppers, red pepper flakes, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, soy sauce, and brown sugar.
- After the pasta and broccoli are ready, drain and add them to the skillet, alongside the beef, garlic, and carrots. Pour the sauce over everything and toss until everything is incorporated. That’s it!
