7. The Vatican
The Vatican is where the seat of power to the Catholic Church is. It’s also home to the Pope, the head of the Catholic faith. One would think that this place would be the apex in Christian principles, but one would be completely wrong. Over the centuries, the Vatican was witness to some of the most lascivious orgies Medieval Europe had ever seen.
Among the most depraved Popes to have ruled the church, was Pope Sergius III who took charge in 904 AD. He was under the influence of Theodora, the wife of Theofilactus, a Roman Consul. She used her 15 year old daughter Morazia, as the Pope’s concubine in order to control him. Together they had a son, who later became Pope John XI (the only illegitimate son of a Pope to become one himself). His successor, Pope John XII is supposed to have transformed the Basilica of Rome into a brothel. With his death in 963, the “Pornocracy” or “Saeculum Obscurum” (the “Dark Ages” in Latin) came to an end.
In the 14th and 15th centuries, Popes Alexander VI and Leo X were also notorious for their “unchristian” behavior. As part of the Borgia and De Medici families respectively, they focused on increasing their families’ wealth and influence. During their reigns many supposed orgies took place at the Vatican, not to mention incest and possibly, pedophilia.
