Once-Neglected Dogs Now Show Off Their Uplifting Spirit
After volunteering with the Humane Society locate in New York in 2012, photographer Richard Phibbs was inspired to create his series “Rescue Me”. The project revolves around dogs and puppies who have been through some bad times, and later finding themselves in shelters. Some of them went through some really big hardships, which show just how resilient they actually are. Thanks to people like Phibbs, along with some others, these neglected dogs have found some comfort and protection.
In order to honor these pups, Richard Phibbs photographed them with some really nice, neutral backdrops. And after long periods of distress and neglect, it’s these dogs’ time to shine. Many of these neglected dogs have physical reminders of this troubling time, but with these dignified portraits, it’s clear that they’ve come out on top.
“The goal is to find every animal a home,” Phibbs writes of Rescue Me. “I hope to inspire people who are thinking of getting a dog or cat to ‘adopt instead of buy.’ By sharing your home and your life with a homeless animal, you become part of this great awakening, this transformation of human consciousness that recognizes the essential value of all living beings.”
Rescue Me will soon be available as a book through the Aperture foundation. In addition to the photos, journalist Richard Jonas writes about each animal’s inspiring story.
