These very meticulous and accurate maps of Chicago show the names and locations of every brothel, casino, saloon or bar that ever ran in the city for a period of 35 years, starting from 1870 until 1905.
These brothels, bars, casinos and saloons were located in the Cheyenne and Levee Districts of Chicago and were very well documented and mapped down by Levee historian Bryan Lloyd.
We can only imagine, based on these two Chicago maps, how life in the late 19th and early 20th century was like in one of the biggest US cities. It definitely had its unique charm and the nightlife was definitely fruitful and filled with surprises.
These maps show us exactly how life used to be back in the late 19th century – ealry 20th century. It offers us an insight on the trends of that time, what people enjoyed doing, where they liked to hang out and anything we can deduce from reading between the lines.
Chicago is still a very lively city, with a lot of nightclubs and a very active night-life, and we can only imagine how people from 100 years from now will look at sketchy maps from the 2000s.
